Fish Findley Lake!
New York State's abundant waterways offer a flourishing habitat for a wide variety of freshwater fish species and Chautauqua County is home to some of the best fishing in the state. Findley Lake, one of Chautauqua County's favorite fishing destinations, offers anglers an excellent opportunity to catch catfish, crappies, large-mouth bass, small mouth bass, Muskie, northern pike, perch, sunfish & walleye. Each year DEC releases over one million pounds of fish into more than 1,200 public streams, rivers, lakes and ponds across the state. These fish are stocked to enhance recreational fishing and to restore native species to waters they formerly occupied. The DEC runs 12 fish hatcheries, each specializing in raising one or more species of fish, including brook trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, lake trout, steelhead, Chinook salmon, Coho salmon, landlocked salmon, walleye, muskellunge and tiger muskellunge. Between January 1, 2003 - December 31, 2003: in cooperation with County Federal Sportsmen, Findley Lake was stocked with 1,000 Tiger muskellunge averaging 9.5 inches. General Angling Regulations

During those two days, anyone can fish New York State waters, and no fishing license is required. This event started in 1991 to allow all people the opportunity to sample the incredible fishing New York State has to offer. Since no license is required, it is the perfect time to take a friend or relative fishing. In 2004, New York State's Free Fishing Days are Saturday and Sunday, June 26 & 27. In addition to the June Free Fishing Days weekend, there are a number of "Free Fishing Events" held in various locations across the state. Free Fishing Events are DEC sponsored events (such as family fishing clinics) where participants can learn about fish identification, fishing equipment and techniques, fisheries management, angling ethics and aquatic ecology. Each of DEC's nine regions can sponsor up to four free fishing events per year. Most free fishing events occur during the period from April through October. So, first time anglers, as well as those who have drifted away from the sport, should take advantage of this opportunity to see how much fun fishing can be.
